Golf Tips – Hit the Ball Forwards

As a dedicated golfer, I find nothing annoys me more than thinking I've played a shot well, only to see it drifting way off target. Even more irritating than that is that I often think I've played the shot exactly the way I have before when it worked well.

That's where you - like me - will benefit from some advice from a professional golfer. I've had many lessons over the past few years, and I'm passing on some of the wisdom that I've learned in a series of articles. Starting with the most important lesson - keep the ball moving the right way.

I learned very early on from my professional golf coach that perfect technique is unlikely to be attainable by all but the most dedicated / most naturally gifted of golfers. Many amateurs obsess over keeping their left arm (for right handed players) straight in the backswing, having their fingers in exactly the right grip position etc.

More important than any of this, though, is hitting the ball so it heads in the right direction. That is, keep the ball moving towards the green. To demonstrate the importance of this 1 factor above all others, my coach showed me exactly what he meant.

He took the club back in a swing that would make any amateur blush, even letting go of the club at the top of the swing. However, when he hit the ball, it travelled in the direction he was aiming, not especially quickly, but was definitely on target.

This showed me that the fundamental issue in golf is ensuring that the head of the club meets the ball in the right position to send the ball off in the right direction. Which is where I realised I should concentrate my initial efforts.

It would be silly for me to suggest that having control over the other things is irrelevant, and obviously things such as your choice of club and the power you put into the shot will affect the distance the ball travels.

The main lesson I learnt from this, though, was that if you can get the ball heading in the direction you want it to, you're halfway to becoming a good golfer. After all, the aim of the game is to get the ball from the tee into the hole. This is where I concentrated my efforts for quite some time, which has made me a better golfer, and hopefully will help you, too.

Golfing Courses From Around The World Described In Detail

by Chris Channing

If you have picked up the hobby of golfing, good for you! You have just signed on a life long enjoyment of a sport that can be used to relax and make friends. You may have thought of how neat it would be to travel to other regions to experience the sport. As it turns out, courses can vary quite a bit.

Traveling outside of the United States takes a lot of work- but you might not even have to! There are plenty of golf courses in the fifty states currently governed. Residents of Idaho can travel to California and have a very different game, and vice versa. Themed courses found in areas such as Florida can also put a new spin on golf that can be exciting to play through for your first time.

Travel to South America and go to Peru if you would like to experience on of the highest golf courses in the world. There lies the Tactu Golf Club located in Morochocha, which is just under 15,000 feet above sea level for the lowest point. Such high altitudes can even slightly affect the way you golf, depending on where you come from.

You can golf like the ancients did almost two centuries ago by traveling to India. India has the Calcutta-based course that has been around longer than anyone can physically remember. Other sites in India have lush greens to boast, despite the sandy and dry atmosphere that is generally the staple among Indian weather. At almost two centuries old, you can even tell your wife it's more of a history lesson than a golf trip!

The Japanese always have a great array of products, ideas, and a way of thinking that makes the culture an interesting one to discover. The golf courses in Japan are a real treat, allowing for many traps and beautiful scenery around complex golf courses. You can participate in world-famous fairways that the professionals have all played through with a look of euphoria on their face. For some there is no better accomplishment.

For more history lessons, travel to China- you can play on one course in particular that will have The Great Wall in your sites while on hole one. The scenery is quite a sight to behold, and is quite unlike what you would find on your average United States golf course. The land also makes for great natural traps if you find the right golf course to visit.

Final Thoughts

Golf courses around the world have a lot to offer. If you don't have the money to travel, you can usually get your fix by simply visiting Las Vegas or Florida to view the many different types of golf courses they have built and maintain.
